St. Patrick’s Day Project

21 Feb

I’m so Lucky…

OK, if you are already ahead of the game and you are trying to think of a St. Patrick’s Day project, here is my first one…  I’ll post a picture once we are done, but I think you’ll get the idea!

Cut out a “Shamrock”  from a green piece of paper.  Depending on the age of your children have them write, draw or even glue pictures of the people and things they feel lucky to have…  Talk with them about how lucky we are to have our family, our friends, our home, food, toys etc…  You can use photographs, magazine pictures, crayons, markers, etc… You can have them decorate one big shamrock or several little ones…   Hang their shamrock(s) up in the house and reflect back on your many blessings throughout the month of March…

My Creative Hubby…

18 Feb

Ben had to work on V-Day night so when the boys and I got home from school he had this for us for lunch…

Extra points because I was running a 103.7 fever and we would have had pb&j if it were left to me!

Owl craft

16 Feb

The boys and I made an owl craft as their Valentines this year…  They were very easy, but time consuming when you figure we had to make 40+…  You could make these non-valentiny by making  triangle beaks and feet…  I drew everything else for my preschoolers and let them cut and glue like crazy…  We made all different color combinations too…  I think they would be a great craft for a birthday party, church craft, classroom, or rainy day!

Hot Chocolate Bar

15 Feb

This weekend we hosted a Valentine Brunch for some friends…. One of the items on our “menu” was a hot chocolate bar.  I just made different cocoa fixin’s and people could make their own hot chocolate.  Some of the options included; toffee chunks, mint, butterscotch, marshmallows, whip cream, and cocoa powder… You could also include carmel, coffee, or what ever your favorites might be!  Here are some pictures….

For an easy appetizer I took heart shaped crackers (but any shape would work) and spread strawberry cream cheese on the top of them.  I then cut the berries into heart shapes and sprinkled them with powdered sugar.  Kids and adults love them!

I love the idea of “candy” centerpieces for kids tables… I’ve seen M & M’s in vases, swirly suckers in vases, skittles etc…  We did sour candies in a mason jar for our centerpiece….

BUT… The best part of our brunch by far was our FRIENDS… We had such a great time together… The kids played so well and the adults were even able to do some visiting!

Teaching Kindness

8 Feb

BULLYING is such a hot topic in our world right now.  It’s a huge problem in schools, neighborhoods, parks, etc..  I often find myself in conversation with friends about how we can “protect” our young ones from bullying.  I’m not sure that we can, but we CERTAINLY can teach them to be respectable, caring young people who do not bully others.  We can make them feel secure, valued and LOVED every day so that they will not feel the need to bully others…  We can talk about how to treat others and lead by example.

A great friend of ours gave us this book and I have recommended it to so many people.  It is about how we all have an invisible bucket that we carry around with us.  We can fill other people’s buckets by saying kind things to them or doing nice things for them.  It also talks about being a “bucket dipper” and how that makes people feel.  It is one of those books that you read and then you find yourself using their language to speak to your children.  My husband and I find ourselves saying “Are you filling his bucket?”   My boys even say “Hey, thanks for filling my bucket” to each other now!  When they draw pictures for Granny they say, “We are filling Granny’s bucket today”… It really is adorable!

Today I went so far as reading this book to my Kindergarten class.  They loved it.  They were giving all sorts of ways to fill buckets, it was so thoughtful!  I also recommended it to our school social worker and she was going to purchase it right away!  Needless to say, I feel it’s a MUST OWN, but you make the call!  Thank you Kai and Ella for giving us such a great gift!

Valentine Craft for Preschoolers

7 Feb

We’ve been busy decorating our house for our “Valentine Brunch” that we are hosting this weekend for some of our best buddies!  We have a “craft cupboard” that, as you can imagine, is more of a craft disaster…  Needless to say my boys invented their own decorations and I think they are absolutely adorable…  Here is what they did….

1.  They dug out some white coffee filters…

2.  They used water paint to paint them all over (similar to what we did for our turkey feathers)

3.  They let them dry and then we cut them into heart shapes!

4.  OF COURSE THEY GLUED SPARKLES (confetti) ALL OVER THEIR HEARTS< WHY WOULDN’T THEY????

5.  We hung them up in all their perfectness…  A craft invented by my preschoolers!

Super Bowl Appetizer: Bacon Fennel Dip

5 Feb

Here is a last minute crowd pleaser for your Super Bowl Bash courtesy of Rachel Ray!  I’ve made it several times and it is very yummy!  Serve it with crackers, carrots, chips, bread etc…

Ingredients

  • 8 slices of bacon, chopped
  • 1 large fennel bulb, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, grated
  • 1 8 oz brick cream cheese
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup crumbled gorgonzola
  • Salt and black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons Parmesan cheese
  • 3 tablespoons seasoned bread crumbs
  • 1 tablespoon flat leaf parsley

Preheat oven to 400˚F.

In a skillet cook bacon over medium heat until crisp; remove bacon and set aside.

Add fennel and garlic to the pan with bacon drippings and cook over medium heat about 10 minutes until fennel is just tender and begins to brown, stirring occasionally.

Remove from heat. Add cream cheese, sour cream, blue cheese, bacon, salt and pepper to fennel; mix well.

Divide mixture between two small ovenproof crocks.

In a small bowl combine Parmesan cheese, bread crumbs, and parsley; top mixture in each crock with Parmesan mixture.

Bake, uncovered, 15 minutes, or until just heated through and tops are light brown.

Blizzard of 2011

2 Feb

This is for my friends caught in the crazy blizzard that spans across the USA…  Here in Minnesota we were socked with 24 inches of snow back in December but today it is sunny and negative something degrees (I figure after 0 it’s all down hill)…

Here are some quick ideas….

1.  Snow Ice Cream:  Click here for my post on making this yummy treat from the fresh fallen white stuff!

2.  Bowl of Snow:  Click here for a way to play with the snow indoors

3.  Dig out your Sand Toys:  Click here for an easy way to play for hours…
