Penguin Valentines

Sutton has been working for days on making his classmates each a little penguin Valentine.  You see it is my FIRM belief that my boys should make their Valentines as long as absolutely possible.  I know the day will come when they will want to buy some crazy karate guy valentine that says “I get a kick out of you” or something like that, but for now, we are going the homemade route.  Last year we made owls, the year before that we made shovels that said “I dig you”.  This year Sutton is making penguins (Shaeffer’s will be posted next-oh the suspense).

On the back of these cuties Sutton wrote “You’re Cool” and then signed his name.  We are foregoing candy or any gifts this year, for the pure simplicity of a hand made valentine!

Here’s the scoop:  You can probably figure these guys out just by looking at them.  We cut out circles and hearts and used construction paper crayons for the face..  We glued them all together with glue sticks and TADA…  My favorite part is that each one is a little different!  Good Job Sutton!

Herbed Buttermilk Popcorn

When you got married did you get one of those cookbooks for newly weds?  Well this recipe came out of the one we’ve had for years….  Of course I had never made this popcorn before and now I’ll probably be making it every week!  It was a huge hit at our super bowl party and I highly suggest making it…      I promised Mr. Dustin I’d pass on the recipe, so this one is for you…

Herbed Buttermilk Popcorn

Adapted from The Bride and Groom First and Forever Cookbook By Mary Corpening Barber and Sara Corpening Whiteford (it’s an awesome cookbook)

1 Tablespoon Powdered Buttermilk (SACO offeres a buttermilk powder that I had no problem finding in the baking section of my grocery store)

1 Teaspoon Garlic Powder

1 Teaspoon Onion Powder

1 Teaspoon Lemon Pepper

1/2 Teaspoon Dried Dill

1/2 Teaspoon Kosher Salt

1 Tablespoon Corn Oil (for popping the corn)

1/3 cup un popped popcorn kernals

2 Tablespoons Butter

DIRECTIONS:

Combine the buttermilk, garlic powder, onion powder, lemon pepper, dill weed, and salt in a small bowl.  Heat the oil in a large sauce pan over medium heat.  Add the popcorn and cover with a lid.  We used our Whirly Pop popcorn maker that you put on the stove and that worked just as well… You could probably do microwave popcorn too…  Pour the cooked popcorn into a bowl.  Melt the butter.  Pour the butter over the popcorn, tossing to distribute evenly.  Sprinkle with the flavoring mixture and toss to coat.  VIOLA, yummy goodness!  Enjoy!

Penguin Valentine Box

I told you he loved Penguins…  He really wanted a penguin Valentine box, so here was our best attempt at one!  Here’s the Scoop:

You’ll Need:

*  A Box (I used a cereal box from Costco, but a shoe box would work fine too)

*  Black, White, Red, Orange/Yellow construction paper

*Tape

*Glue

*Stickers

Directions:

Go ahead and wrap your box with the black construction paper.  I really just wrapped it like a gift.  I reinforced the seams with packing tape, but that isn’t completely necessary.  Once it was wrapped I cut a slit in the top of the box for the valentines to go in, I did this with a knife (maybe a bit unsafe).  I made it pretty big thinking incase someone handed out candy that would fit in, as well.  Once it’s wrapped, use the white paper to cut out a heart for the head and a semi circle for the belly…  You can draw these with pencil and let your child cut them out, or if your child is older, they can draw and cut themselves! We used yellow (we were out of orange) for the heart shaped beak and the heart shaped feet… Use the black paper to trace and cut wings.  I let him find the stickers he wanted for the front of the penguin.  We also put his name with puffy stickers on the top of the box so kids could see it from that vantage point.  Sutton cut and glued everything on himself (he is 5) and did the stickers himself too.  We ended up stapling the wings on because they kept falling off :).  He had a great time and although it’s not the perfect depiction of a penguin I think you can definitely tell what it is!  If your child is a bit penguin obsessed like mine, then this is perfect for you!

Super Bowl Craft

Are you ready for some FOOTBALL?  I always love the Super Bowl even if my favorite team is NEVER in it!  It’s a fun chance to get together with friends, eat fatty treats, and see some fun commercials :).  Really, though, I do love football.  My Dad taught me everything I would ever need to know about the sport and I enjoy watching it to this day!

Living in a house full of football fans, we thought we better decorate for the big game!  I went online and printed off some logos for the Giants and the Patriots for this project.  I printed a few extra logos, just to use as decor for our little party.  My hubby researched which team was wearing their “colors” and which team was wearing their “whites” just so we’d be legit!  The boys had a lot of fun making these football guys and I think they turned out rather cute.  We have them hanging by our patio door and of course Sutton is now cheering for the Patriots and Shaeffer for the Giants (don’t tell Aunt Janice or Uncle Petey who live in Boston).

Here’s the scoop:

You’ll need….

Red, White, brown and Blue Construction paper (or the color of your favorite team)

Skin colored paper (we had some fun face cut outs that we used and the boys just picked the face of their choice)

Construction paper crayons or markers

Glue sticks

To Assemble…  I just free handed an oval shape for the helmet and cut out a square for where the face would go.  I also drew a football shape for them to cut out…  I cut out a rectangle for the body and some strips of paper for the arms and legs.  I let my kids assemble them how they wanted and taught them to “fan fold” the arms and legs.  They used the crayons to draw the faces, numbers and the football how they wanted.  We used glue sticks to attach them all together… Pretty quick and easy.

Penguin Cookies

So… When I look at some of the amazing “cookie artists” out there I am truly amazed.  I mean making cut out cookies is enough work let alone decorating them all fancy!  I am not a cookie artist…  I am an oreo decorator 🙂   I let my oldest son decorate these cookies because he really is obsessed with penguins (I’m sure you’ll be seeing some more penguin posts very shortly).  I think he did a marvelous job!

Here’s the Scoop

You will need some oreos, white melting chocolate, orange tic-tacs, and either mini chocolate chips or brown melting chocolate….

To make the cookies first melt the white chocolate and draw a white heart on each of the cookies.  I melted my chocolate in a squeeze bottle and then just drew them…  You could probably use white frosting as well and just spread it on… what ever is easiest for you!  While the chocolate is still wet you will want to add the tic tac for a beak.  If you are using mini chocolate chips for eyes you will want to add those now too.  I melted some chips and painted the eyes on with a tooth pick, either will work…  That’s it… so easy….  I think that you could also melt some orange melting chocolate and draw little penguin feet or even the beak for that matter, but this worked for us!  Super easy, adorable, cute after dinner treat!
